Sfumato (smoky, blurred) refers to a technique in oil painting in which contours are not depicted with sharp graphic outlines, but are softly blurred using purely painterly means, surrounding everything with softness.
In musical analogies to this technique, the piece reworks the first 32 bars of the second movement, Andante con Moto (“Death and the Maiden”) in Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810, using computer-assisted composition.
